Cédric Villani, My only Lyon

Young and frighteningly brilliant, Cédric Villani was just 38 when he was awarded the Fields Medal – the equivalent of the Nobel Prize for mathematics - in 2010. He studied mathematics at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure in Paris, before coming to the ENS in Lyon as a research professor, and then moving to the University of Lyon 1 where he currently teaches, in addition to his other role (amongst numerous others) of Director of the Henri Poincaré Institute. Always unselfish, Cédric Villani shares his favourite spots in Lyon with us.

L’Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Lyon and the University of Lyon 1

"I taught there for 10 years, it was the reason for my coming to Lyon; remarkable! I currently teach at the University Claude Bernard Lyon 1."

The Place des Terreaux and the Opéra de Lyon

"I especially liked to cross the Place des Terreaux very late at night, coming back from the cinema, or extremely early in the morning, on my way to catch a bus for a journey by train or a flight."

The Croix-Rousse Market

" I did my shopping there several times a week; living life in the local neighbourhood!"

The Tête d’Or Park

"I’ve taken my children for a walk there many times, and I’ve got lost in it…"
